Repeat Prescriptions

***Please note repeat medications can take up to 48 hours to process and acute/past prescriptions can take up to 5 working days to process***

***Please check with your pharmacy to see if they have your prescription before enquiring with us*

***Medication can be ordered up to 7 days early. Please request your medication when you have one week remaining***

 

Repeat prescription ordering is available using the following methods:

  • Telephone - by calling the automated telephone line on 0191 460 8472. This line is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. When you place your order via the telephone line, you will be prompted to leave your name and date of birth.
  • Online –via the NHS account
  • By hand - by leaving the filled in ‘B’ side of your previous prescription in the prescription box on the reception counter.

Certain medications that the doctor has agreed can be issued ‘when required’ are not classed as repeat medication. These medications have to be specifically ordered when they are required. For example, inhalers or antihistamines for hay fever. A member of our reception staff will contact you by phone if necessary to clarify any issues.

Patients who may have difficulty using this system should contact reception in the usual way. Remember you can also contact your local pharmacist to discuss using their ordering and delivery service.

Collecting your prescription

You can usually collect your prescription from the pharmacy 3 to 5 working days after you have ordered it.

You will need to choose a pharmacy to collect your prescription from. We call this nominating a pharmacy.

You can change your nominated pharmacy at any time:

  • at your GP practice
  • at any pharmacy that accepts repeat prescriptions

Repeat Dispensing

If you, or someone you care for, use the same medicines regularly, you may be able to benefit from repeat dispensing. This means you won’t have to re-order your prescription from the surgery every month.

NHS Charges

These charges apply in England only. In Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales prescriptions are free of charge.

What to do with old medicines

Take it to the pharmacy you got it from or bring it in to the surgery. Do not put it in your household bin or flush it down the toilet.

Questions about your prescription

If you have questions about your medicine, your local pharmacists can answer these. They can also answer questions on medicines you can buy without a prescription.

The NHS website has information on how your medicine works, how and when to take it, possible side effects and answers to your common questions.
